Markham, ON - Warm wave, flurries, then a possible snowstorm? Is this how late fall weather should work? Well, I don't know the answer to that, but from the current computer models, it seems like this could become a reality. While there are some disagreement between the Canadian and the United States weather models (Canadian one says the temperature in the GTA could shoot up to 11 C on Monday, so majority of the snowfall would be rain; United States says Southern Ontario should see substantial amount of snow). However, both models suggests some snow will fall anyways associated with this system.
Warm Wave
An extremely strong southernly flow around the incoming Alberta Clipper tonight is going to bring up the temperature across the majority of Southern Ontario. Tonight's "high" in Markham could be as high as 3, with steady rain falling. 2-4 mm of rain could fall. With this high temperature, we could see the snow melt. However, good things do not last, this high of 3 will fall to -2 C tomorrow afternoon, which will turn the rain back to snow. Though just 1 to 3 cm expected, and less towards Toronto Downtown. In the north towards Barrie, Owen Sound, Huntsville, snow accumulation could go up to 6 cm.
Flurries
It's a Southern Ontarians' common sense that after all these warmth and with the temperature starts to fall, lake effect snowsqualls will develop. Up to 5 cm in the leeward sides of the lake.
A Possible Snowstorm -- Disagreement between Canadian and United States Model
A system that is expect to intensify over New Mexico on Friday will find its way up the Mississippi, through the Ohio River Valley, and eventually enter the Great Lakes Region on late Sunday to Monday. The Canadian models suggest that the storm will generally passes through north of Southern Ontario, through Muskoka, North Bay, Cochrane District. This means the warm air from the Gulf of Mexico will settle in over Southern Ontario, and temperature could go as high as 12 C in Toronto! We are expecting major rainfall over this. Late Monday into Tuesday, however, the cold front may passes through Southern Ontario, supplying us maybe 1 to 3 cm of snow.
The American model looks way different. The storm track will mainly stay south of the border, with the storm centre passes through the southern shores of Lakes Erie and Ontario. This means the Windsor - Québec corridor would be in the "battlezone" between the warm and the cold air masses. While some American models suggest major snowfall, some suggests it will be primarily a mix precipitation event, depending on the storm track. If this is a major snowfall, depending where the warm front is, snowfall accumulation could go as high as 15 to 25 cm in Markham! If this is primarily a mix, the GTA could still receive 2 to 5 cm of snow.
To make matters worse, cold air will descend into Ontario after the cold front, kicking in some major lake effect snowsqualls and frigid temperatures.
The Unusual Weather Continues
Vancouver, BC - Believe it or not, it snowed yesterday night near the Vancouver Port. Usually, Vancouver do not see snow even in the heart of the winter. They will just see rain. This time, the snowfall happened so early in the winter that it is such a rare sight!
