Major Arctic Storm

Pangnirtuuq, NU - A long awaited major precipitation finally arrive in Eastern Nunavut. A major storm that started up in the Great Plains of North America as a result of a crash between strong frigid arctic air (originated from Hay River, NWT) and the strong gulf oceanic warm air. This storm had stroke through much of Eastern Canada already, providing strong winds over Ontario, as well some rapid freezing over much of Canada and US. Flash freeze warnings are widespread as a result. Strong wind chill are also resulted from this system.

Now this system is following the jet stream, bringing its moisture as well as its warm air into Eastern Nunavut. As a result, we are seeing warm gulf air flowing into Eastern Nunavut as well as extreme northern Quebec. This warm gulf air has significantly warmed up northern Quebec and Eastern Nunavut. Parts of Northern Quebec in the permafrost zone had reported above 0 temperature, and mix precipitation had been falling. In Iqaluit, the temperature significantly rebounded to a daily high of -5 C (a typical average high of Ottawa, ON). As a comparison, on the same latitude of Yellowknife, NWT, they had a temperature of -37 C as a daily high as they were in the midst of the Arctic Air Mass and Iqaluit, who is enjoying a temperature of -5 C is in the gulf air mass.

Light to moderate snow had been falling across much of Eastern Nunavut, as well as strong winds are also associated with this system, causing blowing snow.

In Iqaluit, temperature by tomorrow morning is expected to rise to 1 C, with light rain falling. This could be the first rain event in months.

The cold front will pass through much of Eastern Nunavut by late Thursday. By the time the cold front passes through, Iqaluit will be back to its "usual routine" with temperature at -26 C as its daily high.

The system is expected to dissipate as it passes through Pangirtuuq, but will still linger the locale dumping several snowflakes here and there. The northernmost settlement in Canada, Alert, could also see a few snowflake with this.

Markham, ON - Major winter storm on the way for much of Southern Ontario on Friday. Details coming up in the next blog entry.
