Markham, ON (Originally from Markham Weather Centre) - Ontario was bombarded with 2 snowstorms yesterday. A Winter Storm Warning, a Freezing Rain Warning, as well as a Snowfall Warning was issued to much of Southern Ontario. The Winter Storm Warning was mainly issued everywhere west of Lake Huron, east to Kingston, north of Innisfil, and south to Hamilton. The Freezing Rain Warning was anywhere south of the line drawn from the southern shores of Lake Huron to London through Stratford, Kitchener and Brantford, including the Niagara Peninsula. The Snowfall warning is anywhere north of Barrie but south of Parry Sound.
The Winter Storm Warning called for 15 to 30 cm of snow; snowfall warning called for 10 to 15 cm of snow; and the Freezing Rain Warning called for ice accretion over 5 mm.
The first system came in during the overnight hours. Much of the Greater Toronto Area started with freezing rain; while areas north of "The City" started as snow. The freezing rain was caused due to the earlier warm wave. In Toronto, the freezing rain gradually change over to snow. The snow continued to fall at a moderate intensity (maybe at 0.5 to 1 cm per hour), and eventually stopped by mid-morning. By then, Pearson Airport reported an amount of 11 cm of snow had fallen.
The worst had not come. While most southern Ontarians got a break during midday, a system centred at Michigan (during the evening rush hour) gradually push its moisture into Ontario. The Greater Toronto Area sees all snow from this; while the portion of Ontario south of Hamilton sees mostly freezing rain with brief periods of snow. Windsor even reported some rain from this. The snow fell at a light intensity between 3 to 5 pm around the Golden Horseshoe, and intensified from 5 pm all the way to 11 pm. By 8 pm, the snow was so intense, that some areas (i.e. Markham, Newmarket) reported snow falling at a rate of 2 to 5 cm per hour. This intense snow continued to mid-night, before it winded down a bit. After mid-night, light to moderate snow still falls, and the snow gradually taper off into flurries in the morning rush hours, eventually ending by 9 or 10 am in the Greater Toronto Area.
Toronto itself saw 28 cm of snow; Markham saw 33 cm (at Berczy Village).
